This is a set of directions sent to me by another Dimeadozen user. They are
more detailed and BitTorrent specific than most. The only thing I'll add is
that they deal with the old original port range. As it has been reported that
some ISP's are blocking that range putting an additional 1, 2 or 3 in front of
the range to bump up to the 5 digit range might be a good idea. Btdownloadgui
doesn't care what range you use and anything under 60000 works fine. Also some
of the newer clients run multiple torrents on a single port like the new
BitTorrent 4.0.2 so a range isn't
necessary. Might be a good idea to open at least the 2 ports above as well as
the port you set your client to listen on however.
This is the real deal-- the
directions
Subject: BT and beyond These examples are from bt.etree
before their tracker went weird.
I assume that your trouble is that you are
firewalled according to bt.etree.org or dimeadozen. In other words, when
you go to the torrent and click on the leeches number
..............
................you get this.
The address in red
will be you, and the red parenthesis around the ( 6881) tells you that you are
firewalled. The IP address above the red one is firewalled and the IP
address below the red one is not. The top one has the parenthesis and the bottom
one does not.
Dimeadozen does the
same thing except they got your screen names listed and only show a port number
if you are firewalled.
Here is Dimeadozen's deal---
If you click on [See full list] you get
this:
again--- "ljirvin,
faketk, and Captain Trips" are all firewalled, the others without the red
numbers are not.
So the goal here is to get the port number and the
parenthesis to go away and thus you will have no firewall as far as your BT
torrent client is concerned. You---your computer still will have a
firewall. This "port forwarding" does nothing to your Windows Firewall or any
anti-virus stuff you got going, like Norton or TrendMico. This merely lets
the BT through without problems.
You really need to have SP2 installed to follow
these directions. If you have a router you need unhook, bypass, remove--
whatever, the router before you
proceed. In other words, go back to how it was before you got
your router--- outside world>>>modem>>your computer.
No amount of configuring this will help if your router is not corrent--
and it probably is not correct is you need to read these directions. You want
to get your computer worked up first, Get the green light, get the hot
speeds. THEN you add your router and if you go back to the yellow light then you
know it is the router that is now the culprit. If you are very very clever and
you think you can simutaneouly configure your router and your computer then you
don't need any help.
I think the SP2 is great. My favorite part is that
it wiped out ALL of those "Critical Updates", and wiped out Service Pack 1, it
wiped out all thos Q and K Hot fixes. All that is left in my add/remove in my
Control Panel is SP2....all the other stuff has vanished. Check it out
The above pix is from my Control Panel. There used
to be a gazillion "updates" between Winamp and Wireless. Yow!!
Now if I go to the Mircosoft Update site, it tells
me there are no updates need for my computer. I love it. Since I wrote this there has been more updates. This was put
together months ago.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
So here is what you do:
Click Start>>Control
Panel>>>Security Center
This will be in the lower right corner of the Control panel
after you install SP2.
Then click Windows
Firewall
and you will get
this----- -----------

leave it
"On" In other words leave it selected. Our goal is not
to get rid of the firewall but to jam BT downloads through the
firewall. You might want your firewall for other stuff,
:
Now click the "Exceptions" tab in
that screen. You should get
The Programs and Services in YOUR screen
will not be the same as this picture. This is my screen. You need to get
YOUR BT client in this screen. It doesn't matter
which one your use, Shadow, Azureus, Tornado---doesn't matter. The goal here
is to "forward" the client right on through your firewall. Personally I use
Bit Tornado, I find the others too busy and too complicated. Besides,
Dimeadozen bans the new versions of Azureus anyway. Here are the speeds I get
with Bit Tornado, however the speed is not a function of the client, it is a
function of a correctly configured setup.

As you can see with speeds of 408 and 509kbs I will stick with Bit
Tornado.
So, now click "Add
Program" and it will hesitate a bit and then it will generate
the programs from which you highlight YOUR BT
client and then hit "OK". Now you should have YOUR BT client in the window. Like
this----
Make sure the check mark is in the box just like
the check mark next to my "BitTorrent
(Shadow....." ---two pictures above.
Now on the same screen and tab, click "Add
Port" and put in the ports 6881-6889. Now this is where people
sometimes get a green light but their speeds stay slow. Or they get the yellow
with fast speeds. We will get to that in a minute. Meanwhile click "Add
Port"
When you are done adding ports 6881 to 6889 your
exception screen will look like this:
Notice I got the BT client and the ports all on the
same screen and each one has a check mark.
Now some BT direction say there are more ports to
open.
Ports 6681 to 6999 inclusive = 119. I only opened the first 10 ports. ( 6881--6890 )
Actually I have never gone beyond 6888.
Now, at this point if you got the green lights and
the hots speeds stop! Go work
on your router. However, if you got the yellow lights and HOT speeds like this
you need to do more.
As you can see I got the incoming but I can't
connect (upload) to others at this point. I still got a yellow
light.
To truly open up all the ports you have to go back
to the "exceptions" page and hit the advance tab and you will
get this
Highlight "Local Area Connection" and then
click "settings..." and you will get this, but not exactly this.
Remember this is MY computer.
Yours might be somewhat different. This is
for my outsideworld>>modem>>router>>cabled to my desktop
machine. My wireless laptop is a bit different. You need to be doing this
without the router-- at least until you get the green light. Then go
work on the router. I can't stress that enough.
then hit "Add" and you will get this:
Now, the "Description
of service" is "free text". It is whatever you want to call the
ports..... 6881= bt 01, 6882 =bt02, 6683=bt03........ You
could name them North Korea 01, 02 if you wanted. In the "Name or IP address of the computer
hosting......." you put in your address. It is
best copied and pasted in from your Computer Name in your system properties.
---Right Click start>>>click "Explore>">>Right-click My
Computer>>>click Properties>>>click Computer Name and then
copy and paste "Full computer name" WITHOUT the "period" , not
the "computer desciption.
Yours is not called MagicMachine. Yours is called
whatever you called it. If you have nothing there, then give it a name. The
reason is that the name automatically transposes internally to your machine
address. It is easier to copy and paste a name than wondering if you got your
numerical IP address correct. Don't copy the period.
Now paste the Full computer name in
here
Now in the "External Port" window you type in 6881.
Forget about the "internal" window, that will get automatically done when you
click "OK" And then you have to do it again for port 6882, 6883 and so on and so
on. It will eventually look like this:

Now go to dimeadozen
and just pick any show to download that has lots of seeds and lots leeches. It doesn't matter what
band. You are not downloading to keep, you are only testing your speed. Start
the download, watch how fast it goes. It takes a few minutes for speeds to go
up. Speeds, regardless of your correct configuation are still dependant on the
firewall status of those that you connect to. A bunch of firewalled peers and
seeds can not supply you the bandwidth for you to get fast download speeds. Then
back on the torrent information page click the number of leeches in the leeches
column and see if the red parenthesis is gone. If it is, than you are no longer
firewalled as far the trackers are concerned----- and then cancel the
download. (Be sure to delete it from where ever you file your downloads).Check
out 5 or 6 different torrents. Some will be real fast and some will only be
50kbs or so. Keep in mind that if you are on a torrent that most
of the peers are firewalled, then it will be slower regardless of what
you do, but you should get 275 to 350kbs out of some, not
all. At least I did. Remember, hot speeds don't instantly pop
up. It takes awhile to connect to everyone. Also,
once you get configured properly you won't get the green light instantly--- it
takes a few minutes for the tracker to detect your status. Sometimes people get
the greenlight right off the bat. I did not. I was very
upset that after all this mess I still had the yellow light. Then all of a
sudden---BANG! the GREEN LIGHT showed up.
Good luck. I hope this is easy to follow. I will
be looking forward to hearing from you. Don't be afraid to write back with
more questions. I got more answers.
